La Damnation de Faust was first performed in Paris in 1846, with Berlioz calling the vast opera a ‘legende dramatique’. Berlioz based the material for this march on a song composed in 1809 by Janos Bihari, written in honour of a Hungarian military leader and politician who was at the heart of Hungary’s quest for independence from Austria. He actually changed the location of Faust from Germany to Austria so that he could include the march in his version!

This arrangement was written after I was fortunate enough to record the march with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, where break-time conversations concluded what a good arrangement it would make for various brass ensembles!
