Composer: Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835)
Duration: 5 minutes
Instrumentation: Brass Sextet (Extra Trumpet)
Trumpet 1, 2 and 3 in Bb
This stunning aria from Bellini’s Norma of 1831 is written in the extremely lyrical bel canto style. The aria comes early in the opera, a prayer for peace to the people by the high priestess and this arrangement passes both the sublime melody and interweaving accompaniments between the parts. It was written for the LPO brass ensemble for their performances in Sicily 2018, hence the slightly unusual orchestration of quintet with extra trumpet. This arrangement would work well for a larger ensemble too, perhaps with the melody as a solo part. Get in touch to see if I can make it work for your ensemble!
